If the lazy days of summer are derailing your healthy habits, you should know that the sooner you get back on track, the easier it is.
Vacations, changes in schedules, hot days that make you wilt–these things can lead you down a slippery slope that leaves you wondering why you don't have as much energy as you did only a month or so ago, why your clothes feel snug, or why you feel irritable.
I wanted to plant a few seeds to help you if you feel like getting back on track!
🛠️ Tips to Get Back to Healthy Habits
1. Start Small & Specific
If you've gotten away from the habits that keep you feeling great, don’t try to overhaul everything at once. Pick one or two manageable habits (like drinking more water or prepping one healthy meal) and build from there.
2. Start in the Morning
Starting on the right foot tends to keep you on track for the rest of the day. We're often more motivated in the morning, so if we embrace the feeling, we're less likely to want to disappoint ourselves later when demands start to cloud our judgment.
3. Revisit Your “Why”
Remind yourself what it felt like when you were eating well, prioritizing sleep, and getting your body moving daily. Why did you develop these habits? To have more energy for fun things? For better mental clarity? To improve a health condition? Connecting to your personal motivation can reignite your commitment.
4. Plan Ahead (But Keep It Simple)
Keep meals and routines easy and realistic. Have healthy snacks on hand, prep a meal in advance, or make a short grocery list. Don’t overcomplicate it.
5. Make It Enjoyable
Make your habits enjoyable! Doesn't it feel good to eat something delicious and nourishing? Wouldn't it be nice to get off the couch and take a walk after dinner in the cool of the evening and watch the fireflies? Grab your favorite partner, playlist, or podcast and move! Why not crawl into bed a little early with a juicy summer novel and nod off a little early, then wake up refreshed! Enjoyment = sustainability.
6. Be Kind to Yourself
Banish the guilt! Reflect on what threw you off track, and move forward with self-compassion and curiosity instead of judgment.
7. Use Triggers or Anchors
Also called habit-stacking, when you attach a new habit to an existing habit or routine (like drinking a glass of water after brushing your teeth or stretching/walking after your morning coffee) it makes follow-through easier.
8. Celebrate Small Wins
Every healthy choice counts. Acknowledge your progress — even small steps are steps forward.
A healthy lifestyle rewards you in so many ways! Get back on track with yours today!
